So far six German cities have played a significant role in my life.
I was born in Frankfurt/M. in 1959 and grew up and went to school in Cologne. I studied in Bonn and Tübingen. In Tübingen, I also did my doctoral dissertation on the justification of normative ethics and established, together with Dietmar Mieth, (1986-1993) what is today the International Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities. Most importantly, in Tübingen I met and married my wife Angela (b. Stüer).
In 1993 I moved to the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Stuttgart, where I was fellow, assistant and associate professor of philosophy and completed my postdoctoral thesis (the German "habilitation") on Kant's moral philosophy. Most importantly again, our daughters Susanne and Edith were born in Stuttgart.
In 2002 I became professor of ethics in medicine and the life sciences at the Institute of Philosophy of the Ruhr University Bochum. From 2009 on, I was there professor of applied ethics.
The Ruhr University turned out to be a wonderful place for interdisciplinary cooperation and research. I had the good luck to work together with colleagues from economics, law, and politics in the international and interdisciplinary master's program "Ethics - Economics, Law, and Politics", which I had initiated and directed from 2012-2025. Working with students from different disciplinary backgrounds and coming from all over the world turned out to be highly rewarding. From 2016 - 2025 I was board member of Ruhr University's Research Department "Closed Carbon Cycle Economy". Here, I collaborated with colleagues from engineering and the sciences. I retired on July 31, 2025.

Bis jetzt haben sechs deutsche Städte eine herausragende Rolle in meinem Leben gespielt.
Ich wurde 1959 in Frankfurt/M. geboren und wuchs in Köln auf, wo ich zur Schule gegangen bin. Studiert habe ich in Bonn und Tübingen. In Tübingen wurde ich mit einer Arbeit zur Begründung der normativen Ethik promoviert und habe ich von 1986 bis 1993, gemeinsam mit Dietmar Mieth, das heutige Internationale Zentrum für Ethik in den Wissenschaften aufgebaut. Vor allem aber habe ich in Tübingen meine Frau Angela (geb. Stüer) kennen gelernt und geheiratet.
1993 bin ich an das Institut für Philosophie der Universität Stuttgart gewechselt, wo ich zunächst als Lehrbeauftragter, dann als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter, wissenschaftlicher Assistent und Akademischer Rat gearbeitet habe. In Stuttgart habe ich mich mit einer Arbeit zu Kants Moralphilosophie habilitiert. Vor allem aber wurden in Stuttgart unsere beiden Töchter Susanne und Edith geboren.
2002 wurde ich Professor für Ethik in Medizin und Biowissenschaft am Institut für Philosophie der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Seit 2009 war ich dort Professor für Angewandte Ethik.
Die Ruhr-Universität hat sich für mich als idealer Ort für interdisziplinäre Kooperationen und Forschung erwiesen. Ich hatte das Glück mit Kollegen aus der Wirtschaftswissenschaft, Rechtswissenschaft und Politikwissenschaft im internationalen und interdisziplinären Masterstudiengang "Ethics - Economics, Law, and Politics" zusammenzuarbeiten, den ich initiiert und von 2012 - 2025 geleitet habe. Es war auch außerordentlich bereichernd, in dem Studiengang mit Studierenden zu arbeiten, die einen unterschiedlichen disziplinären Hintergrund hatten und aus allen Teilen der Welt kamen. Von 2016 - 2025 war ich Mitglied im Vorstand des Research Departments "Closed Carbon Cycle Economy" der Ruhr-Universität. Hier habe ich vor allem mit Kollegen aus den Ingenieurwissenschaften und den Naturwissenschaften zusammengearbeitet. Seit dem 1. August 2025 bin ich im Ruhestand.
